CEMSP | 18th Century Musical Studies Center in Portugal

To celebrate its first year of activity CEMSP organizes an international conference in the occasion of the 300th anniversary of Avondano, Gluck and Jomelli.

June 20, 21st, Queluz National Palace

Since its establishment in 2004, the baroque orchestra ‘DIVINO SOSPIRO’ has given uttermost importance to the study and research of the 18th century Portuguese music - a priceless heritage, away from deserved recognition thus far. Within this scope, in 2013 a partnership between ‘DIVINO SOSPIRO’ and Parques de Sintra – Monte da Lua was established, jointly creating Centro de Estudos Musicais Setecentistas de Portugal – CEMSP (18th Century Musical Studies Center in Portugal) at the Queluz National Palace. CEMSP is formed by important personalities from the national and foreign musical culture, having as its Honorary Chairman the former President of the Portuguese Republic Dr. Jorge Sampaio.

CEMSP aims to establish connections between musicology, musical practice and to raise awareness towards the 18th century repertoire, with particular focus on the Portuguese one. Having as a main purpose to promote and reinforce the development of historically informed practice in Portugal, and to spur the Portuguese repertoire in the international musical interpretation circuit, CEMSP conducts studies, scientific investigations, critical editions, workshops and a high quality musical season, with a strong emphasis on the Clementi fortepiano (which is part of the Palace’s collection) - now recovered and returned to its original activity.
